Ruby Returns is the nineteenth episode of the second season of Regal Academy.

Synopsis

Rose and her friends fly to the Snow White Family Gem Mine to find the shining Dawn Gems, but the evil Ruby is back to marry Hawk.[1]

Plot

Rose Cinderella opens a door to Regal Academy. Ruby Stepsister waits for her to go through, and runs up to the door so she can enter it. Unfortunately for her, the door closes in her face and disappears. She becomes upset, saying that she wants revenge (and Hawk SnowWhite), and suddenly, a purple portal to the Snow Queen’s castle opens to her left.

Ruby is sucked into it and sees the Snow Queen. She is shocked, but the Snow Queen assures her that she just wants to help her meet an old friend.

At Regal Academy, Rose is in ballroom dancing with Hawk. Hawk compliments Rose’s dancing and LingLing tries to tell Travis the same thing, but he repeatedly steps on her foot and the pain cuts her off, causing her to say it in chunks.

Travis’s pet squirrel, Nut, gives him a purple flower, and he passes it to LingLing. She thanks him, telling him that it was thoughtful, and he tells her that there’s more where the flower came from. Nut promptly brings him another, but a PomPom pushes him aside, and holds up a smelly sock on a stick. Travis accidentally picks it up instead of the flower, and offers it to LingLing.

Shawn Beast watches Astoria Rapunzel (whom he has taken a romantic interest in) dance with Joy Le Frog, paying little attention to his own dancing partner, Alicia.  Alicia tells him to concentrate on their dance, and he apologizes, admitting that he wishes that he was dancing with Astoria. Alicia reminds him that he has to dance with a member from his own team. Hawk tells Rose that he likes dancing with her in class, but before he can make his request (likely being that he’d like to dance with her outside of class as well), she loses her balance and spins away. She accidentally knocks three of her PomPoms onto the chandeliers. A very dizzy Rose finally stops spinning, and Astoria takes her hand to offer her balance.

The class ends, and Cinderella announces that next class, they’ll have the Dance of Reflection. Rose asks what the Dance of Reflection is, and Cinderella says that it’s a magical ball where students dance between floating gems that magically reflect lights and colors.

Cinderella tasks the students with the purest dawn gems for the ball. The team that collects the most gems will receive the best grade. Hawk (quote loudly) tells his friends that there is a cave full of dawn gems near Snow White Castle. Kira, Vicky Broomstick, and Cyrus Broomstick overhear, and share a wicked smile.

At a castle, the Snow Queen asks them how their school day was. Vicky says that they have a huge lead on how to destroy Rose’s team. Kira says that there’s no point in telling the Snow Queen that, as she won’t do anything about it. Angry, the Snow Queen argues that it isn’t true. Kira snaps back that it’s VERY true, and that they have to do ALL of the work, while the Snow Queen never lifts a finger. The Snow Queen reveals that she has a new second-in-command who is more motivated than they are headed their way. Kira argues that she is motivated, but Ruby Stepsister (who has just arrived, using her brand new ice legs) says that she (referring to herself) is more motivated.

Vicky is shocked, and asks if it’s really Ruby. Ruby greets her, and asks if Vicky missed her. Kira asks if she’s here because she needs help to defeat Rose’s team, and a Ruby says that she doesn’t “need their help” when she has new abilities and the Snow Queen’s allies at her command. Cyrus asks why she’s here then, if not just to show off her new icy legs. Ruby answers that she needs helpers to set up her wedding. Vicky laughs, and asks who would ever marry Ruby. Ruby gives her an angry look, which quickly changes to one of excitement. She says that she’s going to marry Hawk.

Meanwhile, Rose’s team leaves the school. Hawk insists that they hurry to the mine, and they transform into their armor. They fly off on their dragons, and when they arrive, they tell their dragons to wait where they are. They quickly find a mine, but Hawk explains that dawn gems are brighter and much more rare. Rose says that their location is very beautiful, and Hawk thanks her. He asks her if she’d like to come back with him after school, and she says yes, adding that their team would love it. Hawk, taken off guard, explains that he just meant the two of them. Rose notices the reflection of the two of them in a heart-shaped crystal, and they smile.

Astoria’s dog falls down the mine’s steps, and they all follow him. Hawk jumps in front, and explains that the mine is never dark, because of how the dawn gems reflect light. Alicia (who is holding a dark and seemingly clear egg-shaped stone) accidentally walks into him. He asks Alicia why she is there, but she doesn’t answer. She calls out to Shawn, who comes out of a tunnel leading deeper underground. Shawn sees Astoria, and asks what she’s doing there. She greets him, and says that she’s doing the same thing he is. He chuckles and continues to leave.

LingLing says that it appears that they all had the idea to get the gems there, and picks up a stone with a yellow tint. Travis lifts ups large stone with a blue tint. Hawk tells him that what he’s holding isn’t a dawn gem. Hawk decides to make collecting gems into a contest, and asks if Astoria wants to join. She says yes, and Hawk lifts his hand to high-five Travis. Travis lifts his own hand, but drops the massive stone he’s holding on his foot.

Hawk and Travis rush back in forth, collecting gemstones (though they are the wrong gems). Rose says that the gems in the cave are beautiful, and Joy says that all Hawk and Travis care about is winning. LingLing says that she doesn’t understand Travis. Every time she starts to get him, he acts extra strange. Joy suggests that it could be some beast bad luck. Rose adds that Hawk is also acting odd around her. Astoria says that at least Rose and LingLing can at least talk to Travis and Hawk, as she and Shawn can barely say hello to one another. Joy puts her arms around Astoria and Rose, and says that they don’t need them, promising that they’ll always have each other.

Ruby enters the gem mine, and speaks to her minions, seven female dwarves. She tells them to leave Hawk to her.

The girls on Rose’s team look at a large amount of dawn gems, and call to Hawk and Travis, informing them that they have acquired enough. Travis and Hawk carry their final load of dawn gems. The evil dwarves send a barrage of boulders down the tunnel Hawk and Travis are in. Travis uses fury Magic to push the rocks back. Gloomy tells the other dwarves that their attack failed. Five of the dwarves use their magic to summon several more boulders.

Hawk sees them coming, and asks if Travis is thinking what he’s thinking. Travis asks if Hawk is thinking that they’re about to die. Hawk uses Snow Magic to cover the floor of the cave they’re in with ice, and he skillfully dodged the boulders. Travis tried to follow his lead, but when an inbound boulder gets in his way, he destroys it with a punch. Hawk tells him to watch out, and he is pinned under another boulder. Hawk tells him to walk it off, as he’s falling behind. Hawk jumps on top of the incoming boulders, and the both of them continue to run through the tunnel (Travis having started some point freed his legs).

Stocky (the leader of the dwarves) tells Brushy that the boys aren’t taking their magic seriously. Brushy says that she can fix that, and uses Stone Magic to summon seven yellow stone gnomes, which surround Hawk and Travis. Astoria uses her ivy hair to pull the two of them up through a hole above them. Travis says that their experience was scary, but Hawk says that he carried out one more stone than Travis did, putting his gemstone on top of one of the piles. Astoria asks what happened, and the dwarves run out of the tunnel.

Hawk groans, and introduces the dwarves to his friends. When he introduces Puppy, she smiles, and the girls gather around her. However, she then begins trying to smack them with a dead fish. They retreat behind Hawk, who puts his hand on her head, keeping her at bay. The seven dwarves’ granddaughters say that when Snow White became famous, she forgot about their families, and gave them nothing. Hawk denies this, and asks that they find another solution.

Joy tells Hawk to back away, as Puppy is holding a week-old fish, and the two have a gross contest. Joy eats a passing butterfly, but Puppy eats her old fish in one bite. Joy brings a burger with centipedes, beetles, and other bugs crawling over the meat portion, and face plants in it. She opens her mouth to reveal several bugs inside, before chewing and swallowing them. Puppy’s face turns green, and she has to cover her mouth. She runs behind the other dwarves, and Rose announces that Joy wins. Hawk demands that since Joy won the gross contest that the dwarves leave, but they refuse. They run off in different directions, and Brushy summons more stone gnomes. Hawk freezes the first to emerge in a block of ice, LingLing uses her Fan Magic to throw a boulder over to Travis, who throws it at the gnomes.

She congratulated him, and a rock falls on his head. Astoria uses Tower Magic to create four vines, which restrict the movement of two of the three remaining stone gnomes. Hawk freezes the final gnome in a block of ice. The dwarves still refuse to give up, but Rose uses a flashlight to blind them. The seven dwarves’ granddaughters stumble back into the cave, and Travis covers the entrance with a boulder.

Ruby then reveals herself, and Rose expresses her shock. Ruby greets Rose, and uses her new ice legs to stomp forward, forcing all of Rose’s team except Hawk to move out of her way. Ruby tried to grab him, but he jumps out of the way, dropping his wand in the process. Ruby manages to grab him the second time around, and uses the ice magic in her newly acquired ice arm to freeze his body from the neck down in a solid sphere of ice.

Hawk refuses to go anywhere with Ruby, but she tells him that is no way to speak to his future wife. Rose orders them to attack, and they all run at Ruby. Ruby freezes Rose, Travis, and Astoria with ice magic. Joy and LingLing hide behinds Astoria’s block of ice, and Ruby blasts at them. It misses them, and they run out from Astoria, only to realize too late that she is now above them. She freezes the two, and their pets run away. Hawk tells Ruby that she won’t win, and she says that he’s right, she won’t win because she already has.

The pets inform the dragons of the danger, and they fly to where their riders are. Ruby asks Hawk where he’s like to go for their honeymoon, but is cut off by the dragons’ arrival. The dragons melt the ice encasing Rose’s teammates, and Rose summons her glass slippers. She kicks Ruby, causing her to move back, and kicks the ice sphere encasing Hawk, causing it to shatter and send him falling to the ground. One of Ruby’s ice arms chases Rose, and the seven dwarves’ granddaughters escape. They surround Hawk, who is still laying on the ground (possibly unconscious).

LingLing summons her Moonbow, and shoots an arrow into the sky. The arrow explodes, and purple magic beams rain on the seven dwarves’ granddaughters. Joy summons her Frog Ball, and sends bugs to attack the dwarves. The bugs shoot sticky substances at the dwarves’ shoes, preventing them from moving.

Ruby picks Hawk up, and Rose runs after her. Ruby extends her legs, and the Snow Queen’s blizzard dragon arrives, scooping up Ruby and the seven dwarves’ granddaughters. She flies away, and tells them that she’ll become a SnowWhite and inherit the Snow White Family Magic. Rose begins to cry, but then sees Hawk’s wand. She tells them that they’ll save Hawk.
